Worcester, MA - William G. MacFarlane, 77, passed away at his son's house in Charlton on Thursday, August 15, 2013, 5 days before his birthday, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Ian W. and Diane L. (Pedersen) MacFarlane, 2 grandchildren - Jenny and William, 4 great-grandchildren - Nate, Evan, Jacob, and Dylan; and a sister Shirley MacFarlane of Angus, Scotland. His wife of over 30 years, Kathleen M. (McKissock) predeceased him in 1991. He was also predeceased by a sister Betty Beattie.
William was born in Arbroath, Scotland in 1935, son of James and Lily (Greenhowe) MacFarlane. He graduated from Arbroath High School, proudly served in the British Army, was married in 1958, and came to America in 1966. He was known as "Speed Racing" at age 15 when he represented Scotland in an International Swimming Competition in Southern England, winning a medal after competing against Wales, England, Scotland, and Ireland.
William worked as a furniture salesman for many years at the Northbridge Furniture Co. on Southbridge St. in Worcester and at Levitz Furniture Store in Westborough. He was a Mason and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 19, 2013 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon in Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln St. Worcester. A funeral service follow at 12:00 noon in the funeral home. Burial will be held in Scotland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's memory may be made to the VNA Hospice 120 Thomas St. Worcester, MA 01608.
