Worcester: Lynda Beth (Brotherton) Johnson, 81, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016, in UMASS Healthcare Campus. She leaves her beloved husband of 55 years- Carle A. Johnson, Jr.; cousins Steven Caranchini and family of East Granby, CT, Marcia Caranchini of Worcester, James and Diane Blakeslee of Cody, WY, Carol Kenworthy Wilcox of Auburn, MA; and Hope (Brotherton) Sherburne of East Orleans, MA; and the surviving children of George and Helen Brotherton; and brothers-in-law Andy Johnson and wife Nancy and Arthur Johnson and wife Carole, all of Gilford, N.H.
Lynda was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Walter and Nancy (Carlson) Brotherton. She graduated from North High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Clark University. At North she was active as a cheerleader and on the school paper. At Clark she was active in the CUPS dramatic society. Lynda belonged to Chapter 9 Rainbow Girls. Lynda worked as a contract editor in local insurance companies in Worcester and in New Hampshire. Her first teaching position was as an elementary school teacher at Center School in Hubbardston. For many years she taught at the Paton Elementary School in Shrewsbury, retiring in 1991. She was a long time member of the Worcester County Poetry Association, and many of the members appreciated her superior editing abilities. She also enjoyed gardening, Wallace Nutting furniture, and traveling to Ogunquit Beach in Maine, where she especially enjoyed the Ogunquit trolley rides.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. in Nordgren Funeral Home, 300 Lincoln St. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Michaels on the Heights Church, 340 Burncoat St. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lynda's memory may be made to The Founders Fund of the Worcester County Poetry Association, 1 Ekman St. Worcester, MA 01607 or to a medical charity of the donor's choice.
