Frank Herbert Foss II, 100, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026 at the Autumn Care nursing facility in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Frank’s long and fulfilling life began at 5:20 pm at Lawrence General Hospital in Massachusetts on May 8, 1925. He was the only child of Ray and Catharyn (Burbank) Foss.
He graduated from Andover High School in MA and spent a year at Northeastern University before he was called up to serve during the second World War. Frank spent much of his service in France and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Frank came home in 1946 and finished the accelerated wartime program (4 school years in 2 calendar years) at Northeastern.
Frank learned computer programming while working at Wyman-Gordon Co and made it his career. He worked for three years at Raytheon before going to Digital Equipment Corp. where he spent the next 19 years, retiring in 1988.
In 1960, he joined United Brethren Lodge, AF&AM in Marlboro, MA and became a Master Mason in December of that year. He was Master of the Lodge in 1967 and District Deputy Grand Master of the Marlboro 24th Masonic district in 1976 and 1977. He also served as secretary of his lodge and as a trustee.
Frank married his beloved Joan (Klingloff) on September 18, 1954. They had three children together and made homes in Northboro and Westboro before moving to Briarwood Retirement Community in Worcester. They were married for 58 years and liked to spend time with family, traveling, going on long walks, and researching family genealogy. Frank was a devoted caregiver to Joan in her later years. Joan passed away in 2012 and Frank made the move to Virginia to be near family.
Frank is survived by his daughter, Sharon E. Grattan of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, Glenn A. Foss of Parsons, KS and David R. Foss and his wife Isha L. Foss of Chesapeake, VA.; 4 grandchildren, Christopher N. Grattan of Margate, FL, Stephanie M. Janulewicz of Chesapeake, VA, Miles Pruitt of Virginia Beach, VA, and Hope Foss of Chesapeake, VA; and 6 great-grandchildren, Brianna and Brady Grattan, Maddox and Liam Janulewicz, Makai Braxton and Ronan Price.
Following Frank’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. He will be buried next to Joan at All Faiths Cemetery in Worcester, MA. Nordgren Funeral Home is honored to assist the family with arrangements. Donations in Frank’s name can be made to the American Heart Association.
