Chester Ray Skagerlind, 86, died at home unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Goodale Skagerlind of Worcester; two sons, Mark C. Skagerlind and his wife Josephine of Worcester and Gary G. Skagerlind and his wife Joan of Holden; and six grandchildren: Abrial, Jamie, Jenna, Kyle, Kevin and Katy Skagerlind. A brother, Robert Skagerlind, predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester, son of Clarence E. and Hazel (Johnson) Skagerlind. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post #204, Melha Shrine in Springfield, and Rufus Putnam and Boylston Lodges A.F. & A.M. He worked for many years at U.S. Envelope in Worcester. During retirement, he did custodial work at Boylston and West Boylston schools and worked at Wagner Motors. Chet enjoyed camping with friends, gardening, and spending time with his family.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012, at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, from 4-7 p.m. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
