Worcester—Carl A. B. Engvall, of Whitmarsh Ave., died on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, in Knollwood Nursing Center, West Boylston. His wife of 53 years, Kathleen L. (Grusell) Engvall, died in 2003. He leaves 5 children, Pamela A. Hinckley of Hardwick, Laura Mae Engvall of Harwich Port, Cynthia L. Engvall-Kenney of Holden, Ronald C. Engvall of Leicester, and Debra E. Engvall of Worcester; 2 brothers, Richard Engvall of Grafton and Gordon Engvall of CT; 1 sister, Regina "Cookie" Krusas of Sturbridge; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Brothers, Gene and Russell Engvall, predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester, son of August B. and Bertha V. (Lundquist) Engvall. He attended Boys Trade School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Nitro, Chenago, and Onslow. Carl was a carpenter for Norton Company. He was a long-time, active volunteer with the Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award—the highest award given to a volunteer. He loved scouting and camping and had a special passion for Treasure Valley in Paxton where he helped build the chapel. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Carl loved his music—especially Country Western—and enjoyed woodworking and sailing.
A funeral service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Avenue, Monday, Sept. 17, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park. Calling hours will be from 5-8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street.
