Obituary

Worcester: Barbara H. Smith, 92, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024. She leaves family members and many friends. She was predeceased by a brother Robert Smith.
Barbara was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Wallace and Gladys (Bouthillette) Smith.
She was very well educated, earning her RN from The Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, her BS from Clark University, and certificates from College of the Holy Cross School of Industrial Relations, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In addition to working as a nurse at Memorial Hospital, she was instrumental in opening up and administering the first medical and surgical intensive care unit in Worcester. She also worked as a visiting nurse and personnel and health counselor at the former Norton Company.

Barbara was an advocate of philanthropy and community volunteer services. She was an active member of Salem Covenant Church, served on many of its committees and sang in the choir. She enjoyed vacationing in Maine and loved animals. She also was a Director of Salem Community Corp. (Briarwood Continuing Care Retirement Community).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Salem Covenant Church 215 East Mountain St. Worcester, MA 01606. Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln St. Worcester is assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory may be made to the church.
