Barbara M. Akerson, a devoted nurse and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, at Macon Health Center in Macon, Missouri. Born on December 6, 1933, in Worcester, Massachusetts, Barbara lived a life marked by dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those around her.
Barbara's early education began in her hometown of Shrewsbury High School before continuing her studies at David Hale Fanning Trade School. Her chosen career in nursing at Hahneman Hospital reflected her deep care for others, a quality that defined both her professional and personal life.
Her life journey and contributions will be honored with services held at St. Anne's Church, located at 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. The visitation will take place on March 27, 2026, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Following the Mass, Barbara will be laid to rest at Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster Street, Worcester, Massachusetts.
Barbara is lovingly remembered by her son William Bukowski and Lisa Barney; daughter Bonnie and her husband David Dimmick; and Sandra Bukowski and Jay Norman; and son-in-law Kirby Proctor; as well as by her ten grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren, all of whom she treasured deeply. Her family continues to carry forward her legacy of compassion and strength.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Henry Bukowski and Clifford Akerson, her daughter, Susan J. Proctor, and her sisters, Bertha DeBeradenis, Marion Fillippone, Rose Gallant, and Dorothy Empie, who remain ever present in the hearts of those who knew Barbara.
Barbara M. Akerson’s life stands as a testament to the enduring power of care and dedication. As friends and family gather to celebrate her memory, they remember a woman whose loving spirit and steadfast kindness enriched their lives profoundly. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
