Clearwater, FL—Alice M. (Saarinen) Soderman, 80, formerly of Shrewsbury, MA, died Thursday, December 18, 2008. Her husband of 56 years, Herbert M. Soderman, died in 2006. She leaves four sons: Roy H. Soderman and his wife Marylan of Shrewsbury; Richard R. Soderman and his wife Annamarie of Rutland; Robert M. Soderman, also of Rutland; and Russell R. Soderman and his wife Christina of Jefferson; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph U. and Elinor Saarinen of Shrewsbury; and 6 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Heather, Alex, Carl, Ava, and Curt. A son, Ronald C. Soderman, and brother, Leonard B. Saarinen, preceded her in death.
Alice was born in Worcester, daughter of Alice (Kuchinsky) and Uuno Saarinen. She was a graduate of Commerce High School, Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing (1950), and Harrisburg Hospital School of Enterostomal Therapy (1982). She was a Registered Nurse and worked at several local Worcester hospitals, ultimately retiring from Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg. In recent years, she worked as a home health care professional in Florida, giving generously of her time. Alice was a member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Shrewsbury, the Alumni Assn. of Worcester City Hospital, and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Clearwater. She loved living in Florida and was extremely active in the Holiday Ranch community; acting as the coordinator of their monthly newsletter, their sunshine lady, and their representative member of the FMO.
Alice was kind and gentle and full of life. She will be greatly missed by her family, her friends, and all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, 34 Prospect Street, Shrewsbury, MA, Tuesday, Dec. 30th, at 10:00 a.m. Burial of ashes will be in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, Worcester MA is directing arrangements.
